Halcyon Charities was created in 2007 through the generous donation from Halcyon Lodge No. 498 of its building and financial assets. Unlike many charities ours is entirely debt free. We own the property and utilize a volunteer workforce.
Our purpose is two-fold: the preservation of one of Ohio City’s most prestigious historical buildings, and aiding the community through athletic and arts programs for underprivileged inner-city youths. In 2010 the charity expanded its mission to include the creation of the Civic Virtue Center which is dedicated to educating both youth and adults in the fundamentals of our republic.
Halcyon Charities is also deeply concerned about the environment and how carbon emissions are impacting the health of our children. It is now working on two separate projects to reduce the overall environmental impact of its facility. The first of these is a joint venture with the Glass Bubble Project, Inc. which will reclaim the wasted natural gas heat exhaust from their glass furnaces and utilize it to heat the charity’s building on Franklin Boulevard. This will reduce the building’s carbon footprint by approximately 90%.
Halcyon Charities is also looking into the possibility of installing an environmentally friendly “green roof” composed of various plants that consume carbon dioxide and convert it to oxygen. The combination of these two projects will effectively eliminate the carbon emissions from the facility and help consume some of those created by the Glass Bubble Project.
It is the aim of Halcyon Charities to be a vital contributor to the education of our community and to be a leader in environmental sustainability.
It is the mission of Halcyon Charities to promote Civic Virtue through providing various programs for children, teens and adults. Our aim is to foster an increased cultural and civic awareness throughout the United States.
